Wiltshire

Wiltshire is home to some of the most famous prehistoric monuments in Britain — Stonehenge and Avebury among them — but LiDAR shows a much bigger picture: thousands of lesser-known barrows, henges and hillforts spread across Salisbury Plain and beyond.

This page covers all of Wiltshire, including Swindon, so you can explore the county's chalk downland and river valleys in high-resolution terrain detail wherever you're looking.

Salisbury Plain alone holds one of the largest concentrations of unexcavated archaeology in Europe — most of it under Ministry of Defence control, so always check access and byelaws before heading out there specifically. Around Swindon and along the Ridgeway, LiDAR is particularly good at picking out Romano-British field systems and the earthwork remains of Iron Age farms that never made it into the history books.
